Ok, couldn’t help myself… Some Patina Etymology, paraphrased: What are your feelings on this car, clear coating patina, and the influence of TV shows on car collecting? “Let ‘er rip ‘tater chip!” Owning a collector car is a love more than anything else, and we all are attracted to different things. We need all the enthusiasts we can get in this day and age of declining interest in many areas of the hobby. When I say that, I don’t mean to disparage anyone who is into this. I just don’t think the clear coat would last long if the car ended up in my garage. I just turned and walked away.įor the right price, I probably wouldn’t walk away from this Mustang. Even bubbling up under the paint in the middle of every panel. When I got closer, there was rust everywhere. It was a beautiful 1965 coupe from about 50 feet away, complete and original. I happened upon one that had been garaged for over ten years near my old home. It seems to have been a fairly solid car, at least as far as Mustangs go. In all, I like the car, but I am not sure I like the clear coat treatment. I wonder if they had to get the transmission rebuilt? I’ve never had any luck whatsoever with an automatic transmission that has sat for a long time. Hoses, belts, and plug wires look new, and the owner says that both the engine and the automatic transmission run without issue. Under the hood, we see the same old Ford 289 that powers most Mustangs of this era. These are just minor concerns though, and easily remedied. The shocks look like they have seen their last day as well. While it is a running and driving car, I wonder if the rear end has been flushed and topped off. The car also has had the brake system brought back to snuff, and the GT wheels sit on new tires. A new gas tank and exhaust system from the headers back has been installed. There might be a small area of rust through on the driver’s side as well, but I am not sure. The floors don’t look too bad, except for the spot the owner mentioned on the passenger floorboard. Underneath, we see that the patina is continuing to evolve. I think I’d replace the horn section of the steering wheel as well if I were the new owner. The interior has almost been completely redone, except for the headliner and a couple of spots here and there. As seen above, the patina business basically stops at the door jams. Claiming that the car lived its life in California, the body is assumed to be tip top due to the dry climate out there. The seller claim the rust is limited to the battery tray, one spot on the passenger floor, and a couple of small places on the quarter panels at the wheel well. It doesn’t appear that they started with a bad car either. Three layers thick, according to the owner. On this particular Mustang, we can see that they sprayed the gloss clear on pretty thick. Will this be a lasting technique? Who knows? Fads such as billet everything, satin black cars and trucks, and World of Wheels type show cars. I never saw a car with this treatment until Fast and Loud arrived on my TV, so it makes me wonder if it is a fad. Especially of the car merits more, be it from rarity, originality, or just the suitability of the finish on that particular type of car. On the other side of the coin, I just can’t fall in love with the looks of a rusty car that has been clear coated. The cost to refinish a car is outrageous, and EPA mandates are driving the price up every year. Clear coating eases the financial burden because it saves a lot of money on body work, paint and primer. Not everyone has those things, and many a car has been lost to promises and excuses. God knows all of us have seen cars that have been destroyed by an owner that will “fix it up someday.” Well, someday never comes because it takes money, skill, tools, patience, and a good place to work to restore a car. We need for more cars to be rescued and enjoyed. On one side of the coin, a car is being rescued from the scrap heap in 99% of these situations. I am on the fence about this whole clear coating a rusty, faded automobile. Let’s get this out in the open right now. All this patina is selling for a Buy It Now price of $14,999.99. Take a Texas sized look at this 1968 Ford Mustang GT we found on eBay in Mount Hope, West Virginia. Well, we now have proof that this technique is an official “thing” in the collector car world. They called the rusty finish on the car “patina,” and the idea was to preserve this patina. One of the “techniques” they used was clear coating a rusty vehicle. While I often disagreed with some of the things they were doing to those cars (the Model A Ford in particular), the show had its moments. I am sure most of you reading this are no strangers to the show Fast and Loud.

For so long what we considered to be historical facts were biased ideas created by those in power to reinforce the power structure. In a lot of ways, we are living in the information age and the ENTIRE story has an opportunity to finally be told. Many people complain that we live in an extremely sensitive society, to me that sounds like a cop-out. Baby Esther's story is symbolic of America's relationship with Black people and their overall contributions to our history and our culture. Her story is a powerful and important one, and contributions to our culture are undeniable. Unfortunately, after the 1930s there is not much news or information about what happened to Esther Jones, she was an extremely successful child star and she just disappeared. Her success continued as she traveled throughout South America, attracting crowds and much acclaim. She performed at the iconic Moulin Rouge and was billed at the "Miniature Josephine Baker". She performed for the King and Queen of Spain and was specifically requested to perform for the King and Queen of Sweeden. In 1929, Esther toured Europe and became the highest-paid child star of her time. From that point on Helen began imitating Esther's performance, and subsequently, Kane's career started to gain some steam.Īlthough her act was appropriated by Helen Kane, Esther Jones was still a massive star. Tony Shayne also managed Helen Kane at the time and brought her to check out Baby Esthers set. In 1928, Baby Esther was preforming at an obscure nightclub called the Everglades Club when her booking agent, Tony Shayne brought Helen Kane to see her performance. Jaden McDaniels partners relentless defense and dependable shooting with a disarming and burgeoning floor game. Edwards is #ThatDude, in every way and shape and form. It's tempting to put the Timberwolves higher. Notable Players Entering Age-23-or-Younger Season: Anthony Edwards (21), Jaden McDaniels (22), Leonard Miller (19), Josh Minott (20), Wendell Moore Jr. Right now, though, I remain skeptical of Walker's ability to provide high-level offensive impact in the NBA, and Mathurin's capacity to improve as a passer and defend higher-usage players. Haliburton alone puts the Pacers in top-of-the-line contention. Notable Players Entering Age-23-or-Younger Season: Tyrese Haliburton (23), Isaiah Jackson (21), Bennedict Mathurin (21), Ben Sheppard (21), Jalen Smith (23), Jarace Walker (19) LaMelo is already transcendent on offense and has another gear or five to hit if he improves his finishing/reaction to contact and defensive discipline. Some will insist Charlotte should be lower. LaMelo and Miller are doing a lion's share of the heavy lifting here, though Williams did shore up his rim protection and explore his mid-range game to close last year. Notable Players Entering Age-23-or-Younger Season: Scoot Henderson (19), Keon Johnson (21), Nassir Little (23), Kris Murray (22), Rayan Rupert (19), Shadeon Sharpe (20), Jabari Walker (20) Teams with a relatively small number of 23-and-under players can slingshot up the rankings if they're spearheaded by an entrenched superstar. 31 will factor into where a team lands.įinal spots will be determined by considering three primary factors: the number of notable 23-and-under players on the roster the potential of these kiddies and what everyone in this talent pool has already shown. The cutoff this time around will be age-23 seasons. Ranking the best of the budding cores is always difficult and, to be honest, somewhat arbitrary. If nothing else, it helps us understand which teams got next-definitively or potentially. But there is necessary value in tracking and appreciating the youngest nuclei. Youthful NBA cores often get lost in #TheDiscourse.įans and pundits naturally gravitate toward the league's cream of the crop, and rosters stacked with kids (usually) aren't threatening to upend the championship landscape. The fall color is typically yellow and gold, but may have touches of orange and red as well. Birds love the sweet, juicy, black fruit. The showy white flowers appear in late March, usually blooming about a week after A. It grows 6-10 feet tall, and is native to bogs and swamps from Maine to South Carolina. It tends to have an upright, suckering, tightly multi-stemmed growth habit. Vanessa Richins, – Trees and Shrubs, Amelanchier canadensis (Shadblow Serviceberry): This species is distinctly different in habit from the A. Good cultural practices of fertilization and watering as needed will help prevent many of the insect pests associated with serviceberry. Japanese beetles, spider mites, aphids, leaf miners, several borers, pear slug sawfly and scale can sometimes become pests of serviceberry, but incidences of these pests are low in landscape plantings. Proper selection of resistant cultivars and good cultural practices can often prevent these problems from becoming serious. Other minor diseases include powdery mildew and fire blight. Cedar-serviceberry rust affects twigs, buds, fruit and foliage and can disfigure these plant parts or result in witches’ brooms. Entomosporium leaf spot ( Entomosporium sp.) may cause serious spotting and partial defoliation on some selections, especially following rainy weather. ProblemsĪs serviceberry is in the rose family (Rosaceae), it is susceptible to many of the same disease and insect pest problems seen in other species within the family (e.g. Another advantage is that they rarely require pruning to maintain their form, thus decreasing required maintenance. This plant is noted for being somewhat drought tolerant once well established, but would not be recommended for planting under high stress conditions. It is also useful in situations with occasionally wet, but well-drained soils. It prefers moist, well-drained soils with a pH range between 5.5 and 7.0, but is noted for being adapted to a variety of soils. It transplants readily from field-grown balled and burlapped plants as well as from containers. Serviceberry requires full sun to partial shade, with flower and fruit production improving with increased sunlight exposure. Serviceberry also provides a food source for wildlife. These include using as a screening plant, blending into shrub borders, group plantings, specimen plantings, and used in naturalized settings such as woodland edges. Serviceberry has a number of applications in the landscape. Serviceberry is often seen as a multi-stemmed shrub, but it also looks great pruned into a small tree to accentuate the ornamental bark. The young twigs are an attractive olive-green color. Another feature worth mentioning is the showy bark that is smooth and grayish in color with vertical ridges. The fall color is excellent with varying shades of yellow to orange to dusty red. The edible fruit matures in two to three months to small, sweet, blue-black berries that are relished by wildlife. Paul Wray, Iowa State University, The deciduous foliage is elliptical in shape, of medium texture, and has a medium to dark green color. It has a narrow, upright, rounded crown of medium-textured foliage with irregular branching habits. It can however reach upwards of 40 feet, but this is rare in the landscape. Serviceberry usually grows to between 10 and 25 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. However, serviceberry should not be praised only for its springtime show as it also provides year-round interest in the landscape. This woodland plant is among the first trees or shrubs to flower in the spring, with a profusion of white blossoms that are extremely showy, although short-lived. The “service” in the common name serviceberry refers to the plant usually being in flower around Easter. It is also commonly known as Juneberry, Shadbush and Sarvistree, depending upon which part of the country one is in. It can be found throughout South Carolina and is hardy in Zones 4 to 9. Downy serviceberry ( Amelanchier arborea) is a deciduous, small tree or shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) with a native habitat stretching from Maine to Iowa, south to northern Florida and Louisiana. I tried several different software programs to stitch the images. I kept the microscope light constant and the microscope was set up for Köhler illumination ( R. I captured RAW image files primarily using a Nikon D500 at IS0 200 using a Zeiss Axioscope microscope with bright field and DIC ( D ifferential Interference Contrast optics). I first began by doing some preliminary tests on only part of the leaf. It took me several hours to capture images of a single leaf. The program offers a viewing grid to ensure that each photo I took had sufficient overlap. I used a software program to capture images from my cameras called Digicam control which is free. It is important that adjacent images overlap on all four sides by 25-30%. Smaller pans of 20-30 images can be made by moving the slide by hand, but it is easier with a mechanical stage. To make large panoramas with a light microscope a mechanical stage with XY translation is necessary to move the microscope slide. Eventually, I was able to produce a large image 40 feet tall at 300 dpi (dots per inch) using a combination of Adobe Photoshop CS2023 and Topaz Gigapixel. I also found one free software program that could handle large numbers of images and also produce panoramic images from a video taken of the specimen ( Microsoft ICE – image composite editor). An automatic scanning system is more costly, but it saves a tremendous amount of time when compared to stitching images manually. The use of digital images taken with a microscope is referred to as virtual microscopy. I also show one system by Motic that automatically stitches images from prepared specimens on microscope slides. Here I describe methods I used to make a large panorama of a leaf and some of the challenges I had to overcome in doing so. I have also taken thousands of photomicrographs and with several kinds of light microscopes and all of my microscopes had attached high resolution Nikon or Canon digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLRs). But these photos were all landscape panoramic images or pictures of the night sky and aurora. I have made many large panoramas before some of them 10 feet tall and 30 feet wide with no problem using Photoshop. This seemed like it should be straight forward, but it wasn’t.Īspen leaves were collected in September around Calgary with the help of my father and wife. Many images would need to be taken of the leaf and then stitched together to form a giant panorama. The image was to be a photographed with a light microscope at 200X so that the individual cells and organelles with the leaf could be seen when standing close to the enlarged image.
